As part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s redevelopment of Newark Liberty International Airport, a new modern, automated and more reliable 2.5-Mile People Moving System will be replacing the existing and outdated AirTrain. The $3.5 billion project will increase capacity from 33,000 to 50,000 daily riders, with seamless connection to the new, award-winning Terminal A. The existing AirTrain was opened in 1996 and has become outdated, over capacity, and unable to accommodate Newark Liberty’s rapid growth.
