It’s simple—injuries and fatalities from falls while on the job are preventable! Falls from elevations remains the leading cause of death for construction personnel. In 2013, OSHA initiated the voluntary Safety Stand-Down to encourage employers to talk directly with employees about Fall Prevention.
The 13th Annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is scheduled for May 4-8, 2026, aimed at reducing fall-related injuries and deaths. Employers are encouraged to pause work to discuss fall hazards, conduct equipment inspections, and reinforce safety training.
Key Details of the 2026 Event:
- Purpose: The initiative brings together employers, unions, and safety organizations to raise awareness and educate workers on fall hazards (ladders, scaffolds, roofs).
- Participation: Any workplace can participate, including commercial, residential, and government contractors. Hosting an event is encouraged.
- Activities: Common activities include conducting “toolbox talks” (short safety sessions), equipment inspections, and developing rescue plans.
- Support: OSHA offers resources and provides a certificate of participation for employers who hold events.
- Social Media: Participants are encouraged to share their efforts using #StandDown4Safety.
- Webinars: OSHA offers a series of Webinars employers can use.
This voluntary event aligns with Construction Safety Week encouraging a stronger safety culture within the trades.
On OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down webpage, employers and safety committees can find a List of FAQs, suggestions on how to prepare a successful Stand-Down, a directory of OSHA’s Regional Stand-Down Coordinators, how to get a participation certificate, and how to share your company’s initiative with OSHA for publication.
